TechNomad

My friend Steve Roberts, the "TechNomad". He is a pioneer in equipping small boats with customized high tech gear.

"My intent, in a nutshell, is to conjure a self-sufficient nautical escape pod that has the capability of supporting full-time global voyaging..."

Do also check out Steve's "Microship".

  1. I keep working on the edge of maritime electronics, having some PLB, Radar, tracker, transponder and mapping software to my name. I'm hoping to be involved in a startup which will be taking limousine systems (ac, lighting, infotainment) controllers and ruggedizing them for the yachting industry. I'll add TechNomad to my bookmarks, and see if he has anything interesting in his blogs.

As for the compact living spaces, Americans often never hear of British narrow boats, the craft of the canal networks in the UK. Now converted for recreational use, these things were a cross between a horse drawn barge and a Gypsy caravan. Their minimal living quarters were a fascinating study of utilization of space.

  2. Ah yes, I remember this guy from back when I ran my own 'teknomad' website at teknomad.org. It was meant to be a site where other road-warrior technophiles or 'cybergypsies' :) could meet up and exchange resources but the experiment failed miserably...mainly because there weren't any! It was an idea a little before its time, I think. Technology isn't quite cheap and accessible enough yet that your average, adventurous youth can just pick it and wander the countryside with it. There's still a steep learning curve to a lot of this tech which relegates it to being the pastime of the tech elite, who usually arent the most adventurous types. This guy is great though. Thanks for sharing.
