Doubts
"A fellow who is always declaring he's no fool usually has his suspicions." -- Wilson Mizner
... If you think about it, I guess that anything somebody feels compelled to assert loudly and often, is something he has dangerous doubts about. - eolake
I also agree. One of the things that turned me away from religion in general and Christianity in particular was the realization that those who scream the loudest about religion (I'm thinking about the Jerry Falwells and Pat Robertsons of the world) often act in ways that are inconsistant with the teachings of the religion they're trying to shove down our throats. It's as if they need all of us to accept their beliefs so they don't have any rteminders of their own doubts.
I am absolutely sure I am not addicted to your blog site.;-)
Thanks, you make me think about the things that bugs me. Lost one of my best friends on the 1st of July. She also commited suicide. Life for her was too much. Life for me is GREAT. Just a shame she didn't feel the same about life. That is just the thing about life/being. It is not good nor bad, but both, just in cycles.

PS. Also not addicted to Terry Pratchett, and/or Leonard Cohen.......
I see this loud and frequent asserting constantly from the politicians in Lebanon.
"We live in coexistence. All the communities have nothing but the greatest respect for each other. We are united. The time of inner conflict is gone for good. The Lebanese have learned from their terrible mistakes, etc."
You believe these people if you wish...
Wanna know the most pathetic thing? After 31 years, they still bother yakking. Yeah, yeah, talk to the foot...
Absolutely. And kind of easy to prove too, by observing how often we assert those beliefs for which the circumstantial proof is overwhelming.
ReplyDeleteFor example: "I am subject to gravity!"

Adam, that about justification is food for thought surely. (Examples?)
ReplyDeletettl already gave one example with that line about gravity. How many people go around trying to convince us (or themselves) that gravity is real?
ReplyDeleteWell, Isaac Newton for one "protesteth too much" methinks.

Some people believe that if they repeat something often enough then reality will eventually surrender.
ReplyDeleteNot that that cannot be done (see Cato the elder), but it takes much more than just repeating empty words over and over.
Basically the difference between manifesting and wishful thinking.
I see that Ronald doesn't believe in witchcraft by incantations alone... ;-)
ReplyDelete:-)
ReplyDeleteNicely put, thanks.
